Rate of all recordable incidents per 200,000 hours
TRIR measures incidents after they have occurred. The operational failure and its associated costs (medical treatment, lost time, regulatory reporting) are already locked in before the rate is calculated.
Business impact
- Increased 'chaos tax' from unplanned absence and restricted-duty workers, forcing reliance on expensive, less-trained agency labor to maintain shift coverage and prevent line stoppages.
- A rising TRIR signals loss of operational control, triggering more frequent and intense regulatory inspections (e.g., OSHA, HSE) and customer audits, consuming management time and risking production holds.
- Sustained high TRIR places the business on a formal supplier audit and performance remediation track with major retailers — the final warning before contract cancellation and delisting.
