Total manufacturing cost divided by production volume
The cost is calculated after production is complete and all inputs are consumed. It confirms past performance, typically 15-30 days after the operational decisions that drove the cost were made.
Business impact
- Increased 'chaos tax' from poor planning: premium rates for agency labor to cover inefficient scheduling, expedited maintenance on over-stressed lines, and higher energy tariffs from running during peak-cost periods.
- Inflated inventory position as plants run larger batches than needed to improve cost-per-tonne absorption, tying up cash in slow-moving stock and increasing write-off risk.
- Sustained high cost per tonne makes it impossible to fund retailer promotional programs or meet key price points, putting the product line in the commercial red zone for delisting.
