Average excess fill weight above target
it measures the financial cost of overfilling after the product has been packed. The raw material has already been consumed and the margin lost before the KPI is calculated.
Business impact
- Increased 'chaos tax': raw materials are consumed faster than the Bill of Materials predicts, causing unplanned shortages that trigger emergency orders, break the production schedule, and disrupt inventory position.
- Direct destruction of working capital. Every gram of give-away is finished goods value, built with sunk labor and energy costs, that is given away for zero revenue, directly reducing cash flow.
- Sustained high give-away on a core product can make its contribution margin negative, triggering a portfolio review that can lead to self-delisting the SKU to stop the cash burn.
